In the last blog post, I showed how an ordinary photo is prepared before creating a lithophane lamp.
Today, I'm showing part of the process where the image is transformed into a real 3D model ready for printing. ✨
For creation, I use the ITS Litho tool, which allows converting a panoramic image into a cylindrical lithophane model.
This is where the lamp's dimensions, wall thickness, detail quality, and how light will pass through the motif are determined.
The image below shows one of the new motifs — an old train on a snowy night. 🚂
When the model is properly prepared:
- dark areas remain thicker
- light areas become thinner
- and after printing, light creates the entire atmosphere of the image.
For these lamps, not only the photograph itself is important, but also how it is adapted for the lithophane technique.
That's why each motif undergoes testing before the final version.
In the next part, I will show what it looks like when the model is printed and illuminated for the first time. ✨
